A Short History of Glen Ellyn
Glen Ellyn’s development was shaped by two things: the railroad and the terrain. The area was settled in the 1830s, but the village took its modern form after rail service made commuting to Chicago practical, and it adopted the name Glen Ellyn in 1889 — combining the glen formed by the local ravines with the given name of a resident’s wife.
The village’s defining feature, Lake Ellyn, is not natural in its current form. It was created by damming a creek in the late nineteenth century as part of a resort development that briefly drew visitors to a large hotel and mineral springs. The resort era did not last, but the lake and the surrounding park remained and became the village’s central landmark.
Glenbard West High School was built on the bluff overlooking that lake in the 1920s, and its hilltop siting has made the school and Lake Ellyn Park effectively a single visual landmark. Postwar subdivisions expanded the village outward, while the older blocks near downtown retained their early twentieth-century housing.

How Glen Ellyn Schools Are Structured
Glen Ellyn is served by more than one school district, which is the detail that most often confuses buyers reviewing listings. Elementary and middle grades are split: Glen Ellyn School District 41 runs schools including Churchill, Forest Glen, Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin, feeding Hadley Junior High School, while Community Consolidated School District 89 serves other parts of the village through schools including Park View, Westfield, and Madison, feeding Glen Crest Middle School.
High school falls under Glenbard Township High School District 87, and Glen Ellyn is divided between two of its campuses — Glenbard West, on the bluff above Lake Ellyn, and Glenbard South. That is why the school table on this page lists two high schools and two middle schools for a single village. Because these boundaries cut through Glen Ellyn rather than following its borders, confirm the assigned schools for a specific address with the districts before making an offer.

Daily Life in Glen Ellyn
Daily life in Glen Ellyn concentrates around the downtown and Lake Ellyn Park. The commercial district at Main Street and Crescent Boulevard holds most of the village’s shops, restaurants, and coffee houses, and it sits immediately beside the Metra platform, so commuting and errands overlap in the same few blocks. Lake Ellyn Park provides the village’s central open space, with the Glenbard West campus rising on the bluff above it. The Illinois Prairie Path crosses the village and gives a separated route for walking and cycling, and Churchill Woods and the DuPage County forest preserves add larger natural areas nearby. College of DuPage, immediately south of the village, brings adult-education and cultural programming within a short drive. Residential streets away from the center are predominantly detached single-family homes on a mix of grid and curvilinear layouts.
The older blocks near the lake and the postwar subdivisions differ noticeably in lot pattern and housing age.
Architecture and Housing Stock
Glen Ellyn’s housing is layered by era and by distance from the center. The blocks around downtown and Lake Ellyn hold the oldest inventory, including Craftsman bungalows, Colonial Revival, and Tudor Revival homes built largely between 1900 and 1940, many on irregular lots that follow the village’s rolling terrain.
Farther out, postwar ranches, split-levels, and later subdivisions dominate, generally on more uniform lots. The terrain matters more here than in flatter neighboring suburbs: elevation changes and ravine-influenced lot shapes produce meaningful differences between streets. When comparing Glen Ellyn listings, distance to the Metra station, lot topography, and which school attendance area a property falls within typically explain much of the price difference.
Getting Around and Commuting
Glen Ellyn is served by Metra’s Union Pacific West line, running from the downtown Glen Ellyn station into Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago. The station sits within the commercial district, keeping much of the older part of the village within walking distance of the platform.
By car, I-355 runs along the eastern side of the village and I-88 lies to the south, providing routes toward Chicago, O’Hare International Airport, and the Fox Valley. Roosevelt Road, St. Charles Road, and Geneva Road carry most local east–west traffic.
